Classic Film Review: Mulholland Drive (2001)

Mulholland Drive tells the story of a woman who escapes a car wreck, and stumbles into the apartment of an actress named Ruth. Ruth’s niece, a young actress named Betty Elms, moves to L.A. and is given Ruth’s apartment to stay in while Ruth is shooting a film in Canada. When Betty meets the woman from the car wreck, she discovers that she is also in possession of a large sum of money and they team up to crack the case. Meanwhile, a director is in a battle with producers over the casting of his film, and other strange happenings take place around the city.

A hypnotic and engaging thriller about Hollywood and it’s seedy underbelly.

Good script, good characters and performances (Naomi Watts gives a great performances as both Betty Elms and Diane Selwyn), good cinematography and editing, great soundtrack and score (Angelo Badalamenti of Twin Peaks fame produces a very ambient and droning score which produces alot of tension), etc.

David Lynch and his penchant for weird imagery gives this thriller a unique charm to it. However, let’s not beat around the bush, and let me get this off my chest: it’s not a great movie.

Sure, it’s smarter and better made than most movies, and Lynch ties his stuff up neatly and with a nice weird bow, but he really isn’t doing anything special. It’s good, and I like it, but once you realize that all he is doing with the plot is telling it out of order, alot of the mystique and majesty of this movie is taken away.

Overall, this is a smart and entertaining thriller with some interesting things to say. It’s a really good movie, but it isn’t a great one. I hate to use this term, because only bougie pricks and pseuds use this to act like know about movies but actually don’t, but I can’t think of a better term to use. This film…is a bit overrated. Still though, I recommended it because it’s a good film and you’ll probably like it.
