Classic Film Review: Before Sunset (2004)

So I just finished watching Before Sunset, the second installment of Linklater’s romance trilogy…

This film takes place 9 years after the first film, with Jesse now a renowned author. At a book signing in Paris, he runs into Celine, and the two of them catch up and rekindle their fiery romance from the past.

Another stellar film by Linklater. Not much else to say.

Great script, great characters and performances (Julie Delphy and Ethan Hawke once again display amazing chemistry and give amazing performances), good cinematography and editing, great soundtrack, etc.

The acting in this film is what takes center stage here. Hawke and Delphy add so many great, subtle touches to scenes. When Jesse goes on about his dreams and how they leave him sobbing, Celine tries to go in and pet his hair, but when he moves, Celine jerks her hand back. Just this one little thing conveys so many complex emotions and conflicts.

However, I felt that much of the conversation in the second act to be a bit of a retread of the first film. What they were talking about is stuff they covered in the first, just in a less interesting manner. Was not a big fan, but once the third act hit, it got way more interesting.

Overall, this is a fantastic sequel. Not as amazing as the first one, but still brilliant. Highly recommended.

9.5 out of 10.
